About Kalena and Karen

Kalena Goveia attended Pa‘ia, Kalama and King Kekaulike Hawaiian Immersion programs.  She is the voice of most of the phrases .

Karen Chun is a website programmer.  She is still trying to learn Hawaiian and created this website to help her practice. First she asked her husband, Malama to help her but he claimed not to be able to speak it (even though his great grandparents only spoke Hawaiian and his mom grew up in their home.) 

So with a hopelessly American accent, Karen embarked on her never-ending attempt to learn the Hawaiian language.  (You can hear her bad accent in the Aunty Penny recordings - anyone who would like to send an mp3 or wav file of that would be welcomed and we'd immediately replace Karen's recording!

Karen & Kalena teamed up to create this website to help people practice their ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i.

Kalenalua is a pun on their names - the two Karens.

All mistakes are Karen's (not Kalena - she tries to keep Karen corrected).
